Local councillors welcome funding for road safety improvements on A684

Written by on 15/06/2018

Two Sedbergh and Kirkby Lonsdale councillors have welcomed news that A684, which runs from Kendal into north Yorkshire is to receive £1.9m from the Department for Transport’s Safer Roads Fund.

Councillor Kevin Lancaster, said: “The A684 is the main route from Kendal to Sedbergh and from Sedbergh through Garsdale to Hawes and North Yorkshire.

“There are many dangerous corners and this Government funding is very welcome and very necessary.

“Some money has been spent on the road but, because of long term neglect by our Liberal Democrat and Labour-run council, there are long stretches in Garsdale where there is a real danger the whole road will fall into the river Clough, particularly near Garsdale Street itself.”

Councillor Sheila Capstick, said: “I am delighted to see investment in the route that connects the Yorkshire Dales to the Lake District. Collectively, we serve approximately 29 million visitors a year and it is great to see central government recognise the need for investment to support our rural economy.”
