Last chance to register to vote in this years local elections

Written by on 08/04/2019

Time is running out for anyone who has not yet registered to vote if they want to make their mark in this May’s local elections, with just days left until the deadline.

The deadline to register in time for the May 2 elections is Friday April 12 and anyone registered after this time will not be able to vote.

You can’t vote if you’re not registered, and contrary to popular belief, you won’t be automatically registered even if you pay council tax.

Registering is particularly important for anyone who has recently moved home – if they do not register at their new address they risk falling off the electoral register.

If you’re not yet registered it’s easy to do it online by visiting www.gov.uk/register-to-vote and takes around five minutes.

If you don’t have access to the internet please call the elections helpline on 01524 582905 to register over the phone. You will need your National Insurance number.

The deadline to register for a postal vote is 5pm on Monday April 15. Voting by post is probably the easiest way to make your mark – for the vast majority of people it’s faster and easier than visiting the polling station.

To vote by post you must complete an application form. Email elections@lancaster.gov.ukgiving your name and address, or telephone the elections helpline on 01524 582905, to have one posted out to you.

For more details on the elections taking place, along with a full list of candidates, visit Lancaster.gov.uk/elections.
