Lakes Line protest walk

Written by on 06/06/2018

South Lakes MP Tim Farron will be leading a walk from Windermere station to Oxenholme station this Saturday (9th June) from 2pm to protest the temporary closure of the Lakes Line by Northern Rail and the Government.

Tim, who will be accompanied by frustrated rail commuters, will be stopping at each train station along the route to gather more signatures for his ‘Sack Northern’ petition which calls on the Government to strip the rail company of both the Lakes and Furness Lines.

After months of delayed and cancelled trains on the Lakes Line, Northern Rail have closed the rail line for an initial period of two weeks. Tim has been campaigning for Northern to be stripped of the Lakes Line and for the line to be handed over to a company who will be able to run a reliable rail service.

Tim said: “Over the past few months my postbag and email inbox have been full of stories from local people who’ve missed hospital appointments, benefit assessments, and days at work due to cancelled trains.

“The situation across the North West is beyond unacceptable but the Lakes Line is the only line to have had all trains suspended.

“It’s clear that Northern have simply given up.

“On Saturday we have a chance to make our voice heard and show that we will just not just accept our railway being killed by stealth.”

When and Where:

The walk will start at 2pm at Windermere station, stopping at Staveley station (eta 3.15pm), Burneside station (eta 4.15pm), Kendal station (eta 5.15pm) and finishing up at Oxenholme station at around 6pm.

The route the walkers will be taking can be found here
