Food traffic light labels backed

Written by on 16/02/2018

A call to use a ‘traffic light’ system on food and drink labels has been backed by a leading county councillor.

County Councillor Shaun Turner, Lancashire County Council’s cabinet member for health and wellbeing, said he welcomed an initiative to make food and drink traffic light labels mandatory.

The labels use red, amber and green colour coding to tell people how much fat, sugar, salt and saturated fat are in what they eat and drink.

They make it much easier for shoppers to choose healthy food and drink options.

County Councillor Turner said: “Traffic light labels are a great way for people to see how much fat, salt, sugar, saturates and how many calories food and drink contain at a glance.

“They help people to make informed and healthier choices about what they eat and drink and we support calls to make them mandatory.”
