£65,000 flood alleviation works completed at Grange over Sands

Written by on 10/02/2022

Flood alleviation works valued at £65,000 in Grange over Sands have been completed by Cumbria County Council.as Lead Local Flood Authority have been working with other Risk Management Authorities to reduce the risk of flooding to properties in the Windermere Road area of Grange-over-Sands.

Forming part of the council’s programme of works to reduce flood risk in locations across the county by the Lead Local Flood Authority (LLFA) team, the Natural Flood Management (NFM) scheme is the second phase of a three-phase programme to reduce the risk of flooding to properties in the  Windermere Road / Lindale Road area of the town.

The area has an extensive flood history, dating back to the early 1900’s. More recently, flood events are estimated to have occurred almost every year for the past 30 years – any persistent heavy rainfall causes flooding issues in the local area.

There are multiple sources of flooding that ultimately impact the properties in the lower catchment area.

The NFM scheme consisted of the construction of a bund to capture, store and ‘slow the flow’ of water near to its source at Eggerslack Woods, before it flows down to the properties on Windermere Road. The bund will reduce the peak flow rate and volume of water by providing up to 720m3 of water storage.

In addition to this, a damaged culvert beneath the highway has been replaced and improved, decreasing the chance of blockage and exceedance, and decreasing the risk of localised highway flooding. Minor earthworks including the construction of a swale and careful positioning of gullies and manholes will help to channel the upstream overland surface water flows from both inside and outside of the parameter of the bund, into the replacement culvert.

The completed project will contribute towards the reduction of flood risk to the properties in this part of Grange-over-Sands.

Funding for the NFM scheme came from Cumbria County Council, Cumbria Highways and the Environment Agency’s Natural Flood Management (NFM) fund, totalling £65,000.

Construction works were completed in December 2021 by local contractor Metcalfe Plant Hire Ltd, on behalf of Cumbria County Council.

Cllr Keith Little, Cumbria County Council’s Cabinet Member for Highways and Transport, said:

“I am pleased that these important works have been completed in Grange over Sands, providing better protection to a number of properties that have previously suffered from flooding.

“The council’s investment, alongside partners, into flood alleviation projects is essential to provide the best protection for our communities, and to avoid the devastation that flooding can bring to people’s lives, their homes and their families.

“I’d like to thank the local community for their patience whilst these works were programmed and completed, our contractors, and all involved in the various projects around Cumbria to ensure communities are confident in having the best protection against flood-risk possible.”
