Elderly labrador abandoned in Kent with heartbreaking note

Written by on 08/07/2020

An elderly labrador has been found abandoned in Kent with a heartbreaking note about why it ended up there.

The black dog, believed to be 10 years old, was discovered by staff outside Jasmil Kennels in Upchurch, near Sittingbourne.

It was found with a note from its previous owner, claiming they had been forced to get rid of their pet because it “hadn’t learnt to be good”.

The note reads: “Hello, pls can you take me in as my owner has abandoned me after 10 years because I have not learnt to be good, so I have been returned here where he found me.

“Thank you for looking after me, sorry for inconvinance [sic].”

Swale Borough Council is appealing to anyone who has more information about the dog, as it has not been microchipped.

The local authority’s stray dog service tweeted: “We would very much like to speak to the owner to establish why the dog has been abandoned.”

They will look after the pet until it finds a new home, they said.

A council spokesman condemned the owner’s actions, adding: “If an owner is struggling with their dog, this is not the way to deal with it.

“Rehoming is the last option, but this isn’t the way to do it, so we would appreciate any information we can get so we can speak to the owner.”

Local councils are responsible for dogs that have been abandoned, but tend to take action only when they are in immediate danger from illness or injury.
