Hot weather for UK as temperatures reach their highest this year

Written by on 27/05/2017

Hopes of glorious bank holiday weather are set to be dashed as forecasters predict falling temperatures and a risk of thunderstorms.

Friday was the hottest day of the year so far, with the mercury hitting 29.4C (85F) in Lossiemouth, north Scotland.

The hot spell could persuade even more people to take to the roads for a last-minute trip, with the RAC suggesting the spring bank holiday traffic could be the busiest in four years.

But forecasters say things will start to get cooler by Saturday, especially in the east, with thundery showers moving northeastwards throughout the day.

Northern England, Scotland and Ireland could have heavy thundery showers with a risk of flooding.

Sunday will be a mainly dry and warm day but not as hot as the last few days. There could be showers in the far south and temperatures will hover at around 24C (75F).

By Monday, the temperatures are expect to dip even further to around 21C (70F) and England and Wales face heavy showers.

MeteoGroup forecaster Sabrina Lee said: "It just turns cooler over time then with an increased risk of showers.

"Much of the country is going to be dry (on Sunday) but we do have rain moving into southern and central parts of the country and some of this rain could be heavy and thundery.

"Over the next few days we have got air originating from Iberia and then from about Saturday onwards it starts to break down and the air comes from elsewhere which is why those temperatures are starting to dip,

"It starts off nice and warm and it starts to break down then with the showers and thunderstorms and the temperature is still pleasant but they’re going to be cooler than what we have seen over the last few days."
