Hungarian GP: Max Verstappen crashes into Red Bull team-mate Daniel Ricciardo on first lap

Written by on 30/07/2017

Max Verstappen crashed into Daniel Ricciardo on the first lap of the Hungarian GP – sending his Red Bull team-mate into a spin and out of the race.

And in an explosive interview with Sky Sports F1, Ricciardo called Verstappen "amateur" and said he made a "very poor mistake" as the Dutchman was handed a 10-second penalty by the race stewards.

The Red Bull duo, who usually enjoy one of the more harmonious intra-team relationships on the grid, started the Grand Prix from the third row with Verstappen leading Ricciardo into Turn One.

But the Dutchman went wide while attacking the Mercedes and Ferraris in front of him, allowing Ricciardo to move around the outside at Turn Two.

Aiming to stay ahead, Verstappen locked up at the corner and rammed into the other Red Bull. Ricciardo was then left stationary, sideways on the track, causing an early Safety Car.

He sustained too much damage to continue and it was the Australian’s first ever Lap One retirement in Formula 1.

"Was that who I think it was?" Ricciardo is reported to have asked his Red Bull engineers over team radio. "Sore loser."

The race stewards soon confirmed they were looking into the incident between the two drivers, and Verstappen was handed a 10-second time penalty.

Ricciardo slams ‘amateur’ Max
"For sure it’s not on," Ricciardo told Natalie Pinkham. "It was amateur to say the least. It’s not like he was trying to pass – there was no room to pass, Valtteri was in front and I was on the outside so there was no room.

"I don’t think he likes when a team-mate gets in front. You’ve got the whole race to try and repair the mistake but the pass was never on. It wasn’t even a pass, it was a very poor mistake.

"The team will do their bit and I’ll do my bit. We’ll sort it out. I don’t think it’s trying too hard. There isn’t an excuse for it.

"He tried the outside at Turn One and all of a sudden what was a good start is a bad start. He sees me go past and thinks ‘I’ve got to fix this’ and then we crash."
