Supermarket chain to open store in Eden

The Booths supermarket chain has won a 12-year battle to build a new store in Penrith.

The £11 million store, including a restaurant and a separate non-food retail unit, should begin construction next month with the scheme due to be completed in time for Christmas 2011.

Up to 70 jobs will be created during construction and 50 full-time and 40 part-time jobs will be created when the retail units, located at the edge of the town centre, are completed.

Indian trip students terrified by bus attack

Sixth form students from a South Lakeland school dived for cover when their coach was attacked by an angry mob on an ill-fated trip to India.

House bricks rained down on the bus carrying students and staff from Kendal’s Queen Katherine School just miles from the Taj Mahal where they were heading on an educational trip.

During the unprovoked attack head of sixth form Cathy Earle was injured by falling glass leaving her with blurred vision as the windscreen and all the windows on the left side of the bus were smashed.

Sellafield company posts £47m profit

The company that runs Sellafield made a £47m pre-tax profit in its first full year in charge.

Nuclear Management Partners achieved 94 per cent of its available performance fee from the government in the 12 months from April 2009 to March 2010.

The company announced earlier this year that there would be 800 redundancies this financial year as it continues to “right-size” its workforce.

Ulverston monument set for re-opening

Excitement is rising in Ulverston for the long-awaited reopening of an iconic structure that has been closed since 2003 due to water ingress.

The Sir John Barrow Monument has undergone a £1.1m transformation over the past two years and a day of celebration will take place in the town this weekend to mark its unveiling.

The Monumental Gala runs all day in Ford Park, with music from Ulverston Town Band - who played at the laying of the foundation stone in 1850.
