Man sent to prison following two-hour standoff with police

Written by on 24/03/2017

A man who threatened to kill police officers during a two-hour standoff has today been jailed.

Anthony Grogan, 25, of no fixed abode, was sentenced to 21 months at Carlisle Crown Court after pleading guilty to affray, criminal damage, and a racially aggravated public order.

The sentence follows a standoff between police and Grogan in the early hours of February 8th 2017, at a property on Thornbarrow Road, Windermere.

Officers attended the address at around 5.50am, in an attempt to locate Grogan in connection to a warrant issued by the courts.

From inside the property, the defendant verbally abused police, who were outside. Grogan repeatedly threatened to kill officers, brandished a knife at them, and threw an ornament and picture frame in their direction.

Grogan gave himself up and was arrested after two hours of negotiation. At this point, he racially abused a police officer.

Superintendent Rob O’Connor said:-

“My officers attended to arrest Mr Grogan as he was wanted on warrant. He caused significant disruption that morning on Thornbarrow Road, with a number of police officers deployed due to his actions.

“I welcome the sentence today, as people like Grogan should not believe it is okay to threaten my officers with a knife and throw objects at them without facing consequences for their action. He can reflect on that during his prison sentence.

“Police officers do not go to work each day to be threatened by the likes of Grogan. They go to work to protect others, and increasingly are having to protect themselves.

“Grogan should be ashamed of his actions, and his sentence should send a strong message that threatening police officers with acts of violence will not be tolerated by the courts and wider society.”
