M6 closed between junctions 36 and 39 following crane fire

Emergency services are dealing with a crane fire on the M6 between junctions 36 and 37.
Police were called today at 7.39am following report of a crane on fire on the hard shoulder of the northbound carriageway between junctions 36 and 37.
The M6 is closed in both directions between junctions 36 and 39.
The following diversions are in place:
· Travelling north: motorists will leave the motorway at J36 and will be diverted through Kendal and onto the A6 to join the motorway at junction 39.
· Travelling south: motorists will leave the motorway at J39 and will be diverted towards the A6 and onto the A590 to join the motorway at junction 36.
There are no reports of any injuries. There are tailbacks currently as the fire service work to extinguish the fire and further delays are expected to allow the carriageway to be inspected once the fire is extinguished.
