What do old punks from 1976 do in November 2011?

They go and see Adrian Edmondsons, Troy Donokley and Andy Dinan as The Bad Shepherds.

The Bad Shepherds play punk songs on folk instruments. Not as a gag but as a reminder of just how good these songs really are. And it works! A fiddle, mandolin, pipes and whistles and a little bit of wit performed by 3 men who love the sounds and music from the late 70′s and early 80′s, the Sex Pistols, Clash, Squeeze, The Jam, Specials, Ramones, Stranglers and Kraftwork. Alright there not all punk but do come from roughtly the same era, and are given a kind of ‘celtic/folk’ feel even sticking in the odd reel and jig.

The crowd mainly in their 50′s (and alot of them) enjoyed reliving their youth, singing and dancing none stop from beginning to end. If you can get to see the Bad Shepherd get along to one of the shows I guarantee you won’t be disappointed!

On Saturday 16th October I travelled to Morecambes’ Platform to see the iconic bass player with late 70′s – 80′s The Jam’s Bruce Foxtons band and his new band ‘From The Jam’.

The night kicked off with local Lancaster band Rockitt 88 playing wild and furious rockabilly and surf toe tapping tunes. (well worth checking out if their playing in a pub near you)

Then the band that all the late 40-50 year olds had come to see, to hear the tunes from their youth, Russell Hasting sounding more like Paul Weller than I remember Weller ever sounding, Bruce Foxton on Bass original member of the Jam, and on drums Mark Brezizicki from Big Country fame. Classic iconic song after song thrilled an enthusiastic crowd opening with Down in the Tube Station, Eton Riffles and To Be Someone, then the surprise a new song Window Shopping one of two new songs in the set which went down well. More classic songs and the set ending with Going Underground, more was needed and the crowd got what they want with an encore of In The City, Beat Surrender and ending with A Town Called Malice.

A classic set list played loud and proud just how people remember them. Well worth catching if the band play a venue near you, one down side to the night the audience was smaller than expected but all who did turned up had a great night.
